Hannah Wants, Monki & Mella Dee at The Old Fire Station, Bournemouth

This weekend Bournemouth welcomed the inSYNC team back, but to Bournemouth University’s students union. This would be our second visit to see hot new female DJ Hannah Wants, who we saw support Annie Mac on her AMP tour back in December. This time, though, it was Hannah Wants’ turn to headline, with support from rhythm master Mella Dee and fellow female electronic talent Monki.

DJ Monki is an underground tastemaker. A woman who regularly champions her electronic talents on BBC Radio 1, and through her digital imprint at ZOO Music. She’s only twenty-one, but is a resident DJ on Annie Mac’s touring club night AMP, that we attended in Bournemouth back in December. Not to mention that Monki is a regular behind the decks at a lot of high profile clubs and festivals in the UK and in Europe. Her box-fresh bass music set the tone in The Old Fire Station, and set up what was to be a great night of house. Monki’s bass-inspired set included everything from piano house to hissing snares. It makes for a refreshing style from the regular, standard, house event.

So, what can I say about Hannah Wants. She’s suddenly huge. Hannah Wants has gone from zero to hero of female artists in the last six months who could definitely give most top male DJs a run for their money. The self-taught lady DJ has been noted for her cutting edge style of deck control, and has subsequently become one of the most celebrated artists in the UK bass scene. As before, her upbeat house tunes was a winner with onlookers, and people just can’t seem to get enough of Hannah Wants. I’m sure this isn’t the last that inSYNC has seen of the Birmingham girl, with sets at Mutiny Festival and Bestival coming up over the summer.

London man Mella Dee filled the last ninety minutes of the night, not always an easy task on a 4am finish. If you’ve not heard of Mella Dee before, he can be described, and I quote from MixMag, ‘as a music producer who works tirelessly cutting bumpin’, techno-centric trax to wax.’ Mella Dee is most famously known as being one half of Mista Men, the baseline UKG/New Jersey House duo. Mella Dee’s mixing was on-point, and his set was brimming with brisk, hard house-focused jams for those who stuck it out ’til the end.
