inSYNC’s ‘Needed’ Track of the Week: ‘Need a Little Time’ by Courtney Barnett

Despite only releasing an album alongside Kurt Vile in October last year, Australian indie singer/songwriter Courtney Barnett is set to release her second solo studio record next month. May 18th will welcome ‘Tell Me How You Really Feel’, a ten track LP produced by Barnett herself with Burke Reid and Dan Luscombe. Speaking to NME last year, Barnett said that her second album was set ‘to be darker and more melancholy’ than her debut. Barnett’s guitar-heavy songs and distinct deadpan vocals helped make her debut record critically acclaimed. In 2015 she picked up four awards at the ARIA Music Awards in Australian, as well as a Grammy for Best New Artist and a Brit Award for International Female Solo Artist.

We’ve chosen Courtney Barnett’s second single, ‘Need a Little Time’, from her new upcoming record to be our ‘Needed’ track this week. It is clear the thirty-year-old is comfortable within her sound and uses this to her advantage in the studio. The charismatic lyrics depict that of a love song and give the song meaning and substance. The vocals are overlayed with the track’s guitar riffs making for a typically jangly indie tune. The release of the track was accompanied by a video which sees Barnett head to outer space, leaving an alien civilisation in her wake. Maybe a vision you wouldn’t have got from the song if you’d just listened to the lyrics, but it certainly adds a new dynamic to the track.
