Pie&Vinyl’s Announcement for Record Store Day 2014 (Southsea)
Finest Ladies and Gentleman… at last – it gives me great pleasure to announce our plans for this year’s official RECORD STORE DAY 2014 celebration at Pie&Vinyl!
As you know at Pie&Vinyl, we don’t do things by halves…(apart from pie and vinyl). We have been working very hard on a week’s worth of events in the build up to the big day. Yes, milking it somewhat – but we are hoping you are as excited about this as we are.
Whilst celebrating records, we thought we would also celebrate the beautiful road we sit on. So, this year Record store day will incorporate the CASTLE ROAD FETE, which will take place on Friday 18th April, and record store day itself 19th April. If you are from out of town, you will have something to keep you occupied all day long…come and see what our beautiful road has to offer, with many unique local businesses selling their wares and curious in stalls running all down the road. This will also mean bands playing outside of the shop, which should mean more people can enjoy the special artists that will be supporting our little record shop.
Here is a time line of the events we have in and around the store in the build up to Record Store Day 2014.
It all starts tomorrow (20th March). with the official record store day UK release announcement and press conference which will take place live on XFM . The list will also appear on the official record store day website at the same time. Please consult http://www.recordstoreday.co.uk/* for details of official UK releases. *(don’t be confused with the recordstoreday.com version, this is the U.S.A. release list, and they differ)
Very excitingly, Pie&Vinyl will have ‘The Feeling’ performing live in store starting at 6:30pm, which will herald the countdown to the biggest physical format purchasing day in the musical calendar.
We’ll then give you some time to get excited about the official releases and plan your purchases.
To start the week long countdown, on Saturday April 12th, we have the return of Pie&Vinyl presents… OLIVER WILDE with support from (newly signed to Pie&Vinyl Records) THE BOY I USED TO BE. This event will take place at the historic square tower in Old Portsmouth. More details on our events listings on the website.
Then on Wednesday 16th April, we will host our very first Pie&Film night in the shop. We’ll be screening the latest and updated version of award winning record shop documentary LAST SHOP STANDING. Following the film, there will be a talk and Q&A session from the legendary GRAHAM JONES (he has been in more record shops than any human being alive) – author and man behind the special docu-film, all of this whilst you consume pie and mash! Yum…more details on our events listings on the website.
Thursday 17th April at 6:30pm we are extremely excited to host SMOKE FAIRIES playing songs from their newest album released that very week…details on how you can see them coming soon…
Friday 18th April from 11am – 3pm (and good Friday holiday) will be the first day of THE CASTLE ROAD FETE, celebrating our beautiful road and all the things good it has to offer. Stalls and market traders will be out in force along the road, selling their unique and wonderful wares. Bands will be playing throughout the day, but we can confirm an appearance from Brighton based COMMON TONGUES…check them out herehttps://soundcloud.com/commontongues more acts TBA.
Saturday 19th April ALL DAY LONG…it’s here…RECORD STORE DAY 2014! As well as all of the wonderful things above, you’ll finally get the chance to get your mitts on those must haves…please make sure you read the how Pie&Vinyl operate on record store day below…it’s very important.
We can also announce our first act that shall be appearing and supporting us on record store day…step forward the beautiful EMILY BARKER & The Red Clay Halo. Emily will be supporting Pie&Vinyl and her exclusive record store day release SONGS BENEATH THE RIVER recorded with Mark Ronson at his Zelig studios. Other artists and stage times to be announced shortly
Record Store Day with Pie&Vinyl…what you need to know…
We will announce soon exactly what we will be available on the big day, but expect a very good level of stock for all of the top releases and must haves, with nearly everything on the list being represented.
For those who are new to record store day, and a recap for those who treat the annual celebration as a type of Birthday/Christmas all rolled in to one…here is some very important information on how we will roll on the big day.
We will open our doors on the big day at 8am sharp. People are welcome to queue in an orderly fashion from approx a week before then.
First come first served. We really mean it. We adhere to RSD and ERA rulings, which state that we can’t reserve anything for anyone (Including animals and robots). Damn right too! What kind of cherished event would RECORD STORE DAY be if people could reserve records? You need to earn that LIMITED must have…this isn’t downloading, it doesn’t come easy but the rewards are totally worth it and you will feel like a champion!
ONE COPY OF EACH OFFICIAL RSD RELEASE PER CUSTOMER. You can buy as many records as your bank manager allows, but please don’t try and purchase two or more of the same thing, as we will not sell them to you. This will mean everyone will have a chance to get what they want
We’ll be letting 25 people in the store at a time. Although we are larger, we have to respect the people who have queued for hours and give them a fair crack at purchasing what they have nearly died for. We are a larger beast these days, but still small and perfectly formed. We don’t want to see any crushes/fist fights/passion for music being compromised. We will play it by ear as the day goes on, and as soon as we feel it is safe to let more punters in, we shall do.
With all this no sleep, queuing lark – Rest assured, we want you fighting fit when you finally get to those perfect pieces. We’ll be looking after the early birds and offering pies and drinks for you to consume while you wait. We’ll even take your order and bring it out to you. Food will also be served throughout the day in our special waterproof takeaway boxes. You need to eat, to be strong to face the final hurdle…a Bowie 7’’ or Cliff Richard complete collection? We can’t have you going hungry now.
Don’t be put off if you don’t fancy standing in a queue. Many people were still finding bits they wanted at mid day/early afternoon last year. We will have good stock of everything we can lay our furry paws on. This is why we employ the one RSD item per person– this will insure everyone gets something they were after.
TIPS FOR THE BIG DAY
The first customer was in the queue last year at 3.30am, so if there is something you really, really, really want – Plan to get there early. This may sound funny, but you get to meet some really great like minded souls, standing in line. There was a really special atmosphere and team spirit last year…and when that door opens, you won’t have felt excitement quite like it!
Bring plenty of cash – there will be a cash only till in action on the day to help serve you as swiftly as possible. It will also be handy for purchasing a few teas/drinks and some hot food for those queuing (we can’t take card transactions under £5).
